How to Choose Digital or Flexo for Multi-SKU Labels

When a brand line keeps adding flavors, sizes, or seasonal art, the first print decision is which press type can absorb those changes without burning every reorder on plate work.

Choose digital when many SKUs, frequent graphic changes, or variable data keep stopping a plate press. Choose flexo when a few SKUs run long enough that plate changes stay rare. Do not lock the method on a published unit-price line that the plant cannot keep.

You leave able to match SKU count, change frequency, finish needs, and reorder plans to a press type before art freezes. Soft-proof versus hard-proof stays on the digital vs physical proofing page.

Choose Digital When SKUs and Graphics Keep Changing

The Flexographic Technical Association states the digital case this way in FTA flexo digital guidance: Digital printing is an ideal choice for short run work, jobs that require multiple SKUs, multiple versions, frequent graphic changes or when variable data is required.Makeready time, cost, inventory, waste and material are minimized, and digital printing provides an efficient way to handle shorter to moderate run lengths, while providing the flexibility to finish inline or near-line.

A ten-flavor launch that still tweaks art every month is the digital pattern, not a plate campaign. Digital fit does not ban flexo embellishments on a later finish path, and it does not publish a lasting price break. Unique codes, serials, or SKU fields that change label to label still belong with variable data label printing once the press method is locked.

Choose Flexo When Few SKUs Run Long

Flexo fits long runs with few SKUs.

Flexographic label printing is an ideal choice for longer runs with a minimal number of SKUs. Since flexo uses printing plates and inks that must be changed for each specific job requirement, it’s best to have the press running continuously for as long as possible. When one SKU or version of a label is printed and completed, it then takes additional time and labor to complete the setup, or makeready, of the next job to print—changing colors, plates, etc.

That flexo fit does not set one lasting unit break for every plant, and it does not replace a proof choice. FTA also treats flexo and digital as complementary routes, including hybrid lines, rather than a single forever winner.Spot color, inline foil, or other embellishments that ride with a flexo path still need the finish named in the RFQ; inspect that finish line before you invent a public price cliff.

Plan Reorder and Finish Without a Fixed Price Line

Vendor blogs often publish a round number where flexo “always” wins. Those lines shift with plate count, substrate, and plant load, so they cannot set the method lock for this decision. Use this table to lock the method from the job shape you can verify.

What you can verify Method to lock
Many SKUs, frequent art changes, or variable fields Digital first
Few SKUs, long continuous runs, plate changes rare Flexo first
Core SKUs stay stable while seasonal art churns Split the program or ask for a hybrid path
A public unit-price break with no plate or finish detail Reject as the method lock

Do not lock the method on a published unit-price line that the plant cannot keep. Verify the SKU count against the next two reorder windows, then check which SKUs share size and construction before you freeze plates.Measure art-change frequency across a 90 day window when the brand team argues for one forever method. Write material, finish, and those verified counts into the RFQ so the plant can price the real changeovers.

  • Count SKUs that share size and construction, and those that do not.
  • Mark which SKUs change art every cycle versus which stay frozen.
  • Name variable fields separately from static brand panels.
  • List finish needs that must run inline with the chosen press path.

Send Your Multi-SKU Print Plan

Once the method is locked, the next proof step is a different job. Soft or hard proofs still follow their own guide. This page does not certify a plant’s press list, and it does not promise a lasting price break.

Send your SKU count, quantity per SKU, material, finish, and reorder forecast for a printing-method recommendation. The recommendation should name which SKUs stay digital, which stay flexo, and which finishes ride with each path.
